I’ve used conditional comments to set the padding of (input) buttons in IE. Doesn’t help with button elements though. You could surround the contents with a span and then style button>span with (say) margin: 0 -5px; but that’s rather messy really. Or you could just apply your styling (plus a conditional comment) to an input element instead.

There has been quite a bit of talk about buttons recently and they do seem more versatile than basic HTML elements. They can contain other elements such as spans (i think) and as you say are easily styled with a bit of CSS..
